Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 Reviews

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 Feature

  • For Play on Your PlayStation 2
  • Published by Activision
  • Game Genre: Sports, Game Sub-Genre: Action, Adventure
  • Tony Hawk Theme
The best extreme-sports game ever gets even better in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. The elements that made the last two games a success are back: tight controls, deep trick system, a wide selection of skaters (including Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Rodney Mullen, Chad Muska, Elissa Steamer, and others), and a slick soundtrack (featuring the Ramones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Motorhead, KRS-One, Redman, and more). Adding to the already brilliant formula is a new trick, updated graphics, and Internet play.

In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, players were introduced to the manual--a move that greatly revolutionized the series' gameplay. This installment introduces the revert, and while it isn't as significant an addition as the manual, it does add another layer to the already deep trick system. The game features solid graphics, but a level of detail was sacrificed in order to make the game's levels so large. There are a few frame skips and polygon clips, but these occasions are rare and do not overshadow the stellar gameplay.

Career mode is as deep as ever, with eight objective-filled levels. In this single-player mode, players traverse their way through some brilliantly designed courses to achieve high scores, find the letters to the word "skate," find hidden videotapes, and interact with level-specific objects. Two players can participate in the five multiplayer minigames, which include king of the hill, horse, and trick attack. Up to four players can join Internet or LAN games through the use of the PS2 Network Adapter or numerous USB devices. Supported USB Ethernet adapters include LinkSys EtherFast USB100TX, D-Link DSB-650TX, SMC EZNET-USB 2102, and SOHOware NUB100. Supported USB modems include Zoom FaxModem 2985L, Pocket NetSurfer NMT00700, MultiTech MT5634ZBA, and Actiontec USB56012-01CW. USB keyboards are also supported, enabling players to type trash online.

We tested Internet play using the LinkSys and a DSL modem; the action was very smooth with no noticeable lag. On its own, this is a top-shelf title, but considering its Internet capabilities, there's no reason for fans of sports, action, and platform games not to own Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. This game will satisfy them all. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • First Internet-capable PS2 game
  • Tight, addictive, outstanding gameplay
  • Gargantuan levels and plenty of objects to interact with
Cons:
  • Some minor graphics glitches

Triple Play Baseball

Triple Play Baseball Reviews

Triple Play Baseball Feature

  • Game has a great soundtrack featuring Chuck D, Vitamin C, and Fastball
  • Enhanced A1 - Expert input from Dusty Baker
  • 1 - 2 Players
'Tis the season for an extra spring in your step... especially if the bases are loaded and your pathetic excuse of a swing plopped the ball at the pitcher's feet. Even if you haven't been up to bat for a season or two, Triple Play Baseball should whip you back into shape in no time. The series debut on the next-generation system packs the punch everyone expects with accurate player models from the 2001 team rosters, highly detailed renderings of all 30 major league stadiums, realistic lighting and shadows, smooth camera transitions, and a few choice gameplay enhancements to boot.

EA Sports tweaked the interfaces and fielding control to pop the offensive and defensive experience up a few notches. The pitcher/batter interface is updated, allowing players to control a greater range of attributes--from stance, batting angle, and power to pitching angle and speed. In addition to standard play modes for one or two players--Single Game, Season, and Playoffs--Triple Play Baseball features a Big League Challenge mode, challenging 12 Major Leaguers to a home run hitting tournament. Throughout the game, Toronto Blue Jays manager Buck Martinez and Sean McDonough deliver color commentary and play-by-play narration in the series' fine form. --Eric Twelker 2001 - EA Sports / Playstation 2 Console Video Game - Triple Play Baseball - Rated E for Everyone - Features: Lifelike Players & Realistic Animations / New Pitcher : Batter Interface / Improved Fielding / Enhanced AI / Exclusive Big League Challenge License / Heavy Hitting Soundtrack + more - Contains: Original Case / Disc/ Artwork / Manual - For 1-2 Players - Like New - Limited Edition - Collectible - One of the first games for Playstation 2

MLB 10: The Show game logo
Take the Road to the Show
Road to the Show is the signature game mode in MLB 10: The Show for PlayStation 2. Create and customize a player and put him through a set of interactive training routines that will build his skills and prepare him to make the leap from the Bush leagues, to the Majors. Once he joins an organization, the player controls his/her created character's individual career, gaining skill points earned through accomplishing goals that are handed down by the team manager. Keep your stats sheet headed in the right direction though, because points can also be deducted for goals not met, resulting in a career showing not even close to something you would see in Coopers Town.

Street Hoops for PlayStation 2

Street Hoops for PlayStation 2 Reviews

Other Picture

Street Hoops for PlayStation 2 Feature

  • Platform: PlayStation 2
  • ESRB Rating: Teen
  • Genre: Sports
Street Hoops is like the kid who shows up on the first day of school decked out in brand-new, brand-name duds, trying really hard to be cool and laid-back, while his rival (in this case, NBA Street) effortlessly oozes hip, relaxed charm. It's not that it's a bad game--it's that it could be so much more, if only it wasn't trying so hard, and in the most shallow ways.

Everything about Hoops is overly complicated, with no real payoff. The players can be personalized and stylized--you get to pick haircuts, jewelry, tattoos, and clothing. But instead of being a cherry on top of an otherwise great game, this decoration is in some ways more interesting than the actual court time. This issue of mixed-up priorities really takes root in the mechanics of the game. Considering there's no tutorial, the overly designed controller configuration gets in the way of just starting up and playing the game for the fun of it. In another example, unless you assign controllers to teams in the opening menu, the game mysteriously starts playing itself.

The music is great, with songs by mainstream hip-hop artists. But the abundance of tie-in deals seems like overcompensation for poor play. Hoops sometimes feels like a catalog, heavy with ads for clothing, sneakers, and sunglasses. In a spectacular example of the obtrusiveness of this co-branding, gamers can get cheats by buying real-world Sprite (vending machines for the soda are also littered throughout the game maps). Still, there's a fair amount to recommend Hoops--mainly the presence of real-life street ballers. The opening cinematic of inspired tricking makes you want to invest the time to make this game pay off. Anyone who just wants to play a little ball with their friends--a pickup game instead of a tournament--would be better off looking to the unmatched NBA Street. --Jennifer Hauseman

Pros:

  • Options like taunt and intentional foul evoke true baller bravado
  • Hip-hop soundtrack includes "Da Rockwilder" (Method Man and Redman), "Who We Be" (DMX), "Make Em Say Ugh" (Master P), and "Rollout" (Ludacris)
Cons:
  • More development time was spent on partnership deals than gameplay
Street Hoops is an"in your face" street-style basketball game that captures the aggressive energy and attitude of blacktop competition. The game lets you compete in a nationwide tournament representing your hometown on the most notorious street courts in the nation. Choose from a roster of athletes and performers, including key players that were featured in the And 1 Mix Tapes and Nike's"Freestyle" commercial series. The game features real world locations where you can compete on 10 of the most revered street courts in America, including NYC's West 4th Street, a.k.a."The Cage", L.A.'s Venice Beach Courts, Oakland's Mosswood Playground, Philadelphia's Lombard Court, Chicago's Jackson Park, NYC's Rucker Park, Atlanta's Run n' Shoot and New Orleans' Shakespeare Park. You get ultra-realistic courts; designers ensured that each court is an exact replica of the real blacktop basketball court right down to the graffiti, quality of the court and culture of the neighborhood. Choose from three awesome modes of play; defend your home turf in King of the Court, take it to the road inWorld Tournament or hone their skills with Pick-Up Game. The multiplayer exhibition-style pick-up game can be played on a full court or a half court, with gamers playing head-to-head or on the same team. You can initially choose from 9 different teams or they can build their own unique, customized"ballers." In addition, you can play one-on-one to five-on-five and anything in between.

Nhl Faceoff 2001 Ps2

Nhl Faceoff 2001 Ps2 Reviews

Other Picture

Though this game looks like nothing more than a souped-up version of its PS One cousin--there's very little that separates the visuals in this game from the previous PlayStation versions--NHL FaceOff 2001 does reliably score in most other categories.

The game has all of the usual bells and whistles associated with a big-time interactive hockey simulation, as well as a few new ones such as the puck halo, which makes the puck easier to see when it's in the corners or in front of the net. Gamers can take to the ice against a team of all-time hockey legends, including Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Phil Esposito, and Marcel Dionne. They can also draft and build their own teams from scratch.

For those new to the series, FaceOff's all-new practice mode allows you to get a feel for the game in all aspects, including passing, checking, and scoring, before going up against any one of the NHL's 30 different teams.

To make up for the game's disappointing graphics, 989 made the gameplay blazingly fast, and its smooth animation is one area where the game surpasses its PlayStation cousin. The sounds of the game, like players' skates cutting through the ice as they stride toward the net or turn quickly to cut off another player, are perfectly represented. Even crowd noises above the action and hard hits against the boards are perfectly echoed. These little things help make this game a contender for the Interactive Stanley Cup.

EA Sports' NHL 2001 definitely has some competition this year, which is very good for everybody. Either way hockey fans choose, they can't lose! --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • A lightning-quick hockey simulation
  • Great control
  • Brings NHL legends back to the game
Cons:
  • Substandard graphics
  • Scoring is at times too easy

NBA 2K2 (Playstation 2)

NBA 2K2 (Playstation 2) Reviews

Other Picture

When Sega decided to discontinue the Dreamcast, it opted to make its excellent sports titles available for other consoles. And not a moment too soon. Competition is always a good thing, and Sega Sports titles, including NBA 2K2, are some of the best in the business.

NBA 2K2 features all the teams, rosters, and, most importantly, rule changes (like the now-legal zone defense) found in the real NBA. Player faces have been mapped to realistic body types (complete with tattoos), so you can identify a big man like Shaq or a speedster like Iverson without looking at their numbers. The game takes full advantage of the graphics-rendering power of advanced consoles by including better texturing, lighting effects, facial animations, and a higher polygon count to make sure all the jukes, spins, jumps, and dunks are as realistic as possible. The audio is also good, particularly the play-by-play, which is accurate and speedy.

The controls are intuitive--even for people used to the Dreamcast--especially in the area of on-the-fly play calling. You can now use the right analog stick instead of the digital pad, so you don't have to take your thumb off the main controls (left analog stick) to call a new play or change formations. Other controls let you quickly and fluidly box out your opponent, spin, shoot, pass, fake, and dunk.

There are also eight street-ball courts, and this addition makes for an almost entirely new game. In this respect, it is the equal of the EA Sports NBA Live series. But NBA 2K2 surpasses EA's title with its excellent AI. This game is challenging, satisfying, and fun in both single and multiplayer modes. --Bob Andrews

Pros:

  • Gorgeous graphics
  • Intuitive controls
  • Great AI
Cons:
